Hurricane Nicole lays waste to Florida coast

Hurricane Nicole, coming just about a month after Hurricane Ian, caused power outages, structure damage, impassable thoroughfares, and a handful of deaths as it hit Florida’s Atlantic Coast as a Category 1 hurricane packing a powerful storm surge.

Photojournalists have documented beach erosion and leveled houses near Daytona Beach Shores. High rises were declared unsafe and evacuated, The New York Times reports.

Many schools in the state along the Atlantic Coast were closed Thursday and preemptively on Friday if the day wasn’t already a scheduled holiday.

Two people died in the Orlando area after coming into contact with a power line downed by the storm on Thursday, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said, according to a report on FOX-35 News.
