Movie review: Superman (2025)

James Gunn’s Superman, released July 11 as the debut film of the new DC Universe, breathes fresh life into the franchise by skipping the well-worn origin story and focusing on a more grounded, character-driven narrative, writes Atticus Ball at Edwardsville High School in Illinois.

The film introduces a world already filled with superheroes and follows Clark Kent (David Corenswet) three years into his heroic career as he battles a ruthless Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), whose obsession with destroying Superman leads to large-scale chaos and political intrigue. The movie balances action with strong character dynamics, particularly offering a refreshing take on Clark’s relationship with Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), free of old tropes and rich with chemistry and mutual respect.

Supporting characters like Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and Mr Terrific add humor and authenticity, while underlying political commentary critiques corporate power and global conflict without overshadowing Superman’s hopeful message of kindness and humanity. By emphasizing Clark’s moral compass over his superpowers, Gunn delivers a heartfelt, modern interpretation of the iconic hero that distinguishes itself from Zack Snyder’s darker, more detached vision of the character.
