President declares swine flu a national emergency

The White House on Saturday said President Barack Obama had signed a proclamation that would allow medical officials to bypass certain federal requirements in fighting the outbreak of swine flu.

The move was said to be similar to a declaration of an emergency that he would make before a hurricane makes landfall.
