Lukas Verzbicas, a third-year senior from Carl Sandburg High School in Orland Park, almost broke the state’s cross country record at the state finals Saturday. The current record, set in 1972, is 13 minutes 50.6 seconds, set by Craig Virgin, who was in attendance at the championship meet.

The Class 3A cross country state title went to York High School from Elmhurst, despite the disqualification of one of the school’s runners for committing a foul during the race. Verzbicas’s time in his state title run was 13:54, although announcements during the meet put the time at 13:53. In either case, it was just short of the record Mr Virgin turned in 38 years ago.
