Chicago Bears to host state football champs on Dec 29

-

The Illinois High School Association and the Chicago Bears NFL football team have announced that head coaches and player representatives from the state football champions in all eight classes will be invited to the Bears-Packers game at Soldier Field in Chicago. They will be honored in an on-field ceremony during halftime, and highlights from their championship games will be shown on the big video boards.

“The Chicago Bears are dedicated to supporting high school football throughout the state of Illinois, and we will be proud to recognize our 2013 football state champion teams during halftime of our game on Dec 29,” said Bears Chairman George H McCaskey. “Winning a state title is a monumental accomplishment, and we look forward to congratulating each championship team.”

Something to encourage student-athletes to keep up the hard work as their seasons reach a climax—that’s what this is. The Bears and Packers are as close as the NFL comes to founding fathers, and the rivalry goes back to the very beginnings of pro football, which was about 1921, and continues today.

The 64 teams still alive in the IHSA football playoffs have three more games to win before they can start making plans to be in Chicago during their winter breaks. The state title games will be played at Huskie Stadium on the campus of Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Friday and Saturday, Nov 29 and 30. The Class 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A games will be contested on Friday, with the Class 5A, 6A, 7A, and 8A games unfolding on Saturday.

“Illinois has many great things—high school football and the Chicago Bears are near the top,” said Mercer County High School football coach Nat Zunkel, who was recognized by the Bears last year after he led his squad to the Class 2A state title. “The Chicago Bears and their personnel announcing the IHSA State Champions at halftime of the game is what I consider a ‘forever moment.’ Not only for the exceptional student-athletes in attendance, but for entire communities across the state.”
