Tax referendum passes, will keep Grant CCSD 110 solvent

-

With all 13 precincts reporting in Grant Community Consolidated School District 110, 1,638 voters approved a referendum today that will increase taxes levied by the school district for certain residents of St Clair County, near St Louis, compared to 530 voters who rejected the referendum.

The district would have been forced to dissolve if voters hadn’t approved the referendum. The favorable vote will therefore keep Illini Elementary School and Grant Middle School within District 110’s jurisdiction.

We provided a more detailed analysis of the issues behind this referendum last year, here. And the Belleville News-Democrat has coverage today. Additional articles have been referenced on the district’s Facebook page, here.

As we pointed out in our earlier report, residents within the school district’s boundaries would have seen a tax increase even if they had rejected the referendum at the ballot box: all neighboring districts, by which students would have been absorbed, have higher mill rates than District 110 has, though the new rate will be in about the middle of tax rates in the region.

Other Illinois primary results

For governor, incumbent Pat Quinn and his running mate, Paul Vallas, will be nominated by the Democratic Party.

And with about 97 percent of the state’s precincts reporting at 10:30 PM, charter school entrepreneur Bruce Rauner and his running mate, Evelyn Sanguinetti, have a 2-point lead to be the nominees from the Republican Party in November’s general election.

Voters in Peoria soundly defeated a sales tax increase that would have provided funding for schools.

Voters in west-suburban Cicero approved a new elementary school.
