The USA Today newspaper announced what it considers the top 50 high school varsity football teams in the country for the fall 2014 season, and four teams from Illinois made the cut.
40. Wilmette (Loyola Academy)
42. East St Louis Senior
43. Chicago (Mount Carmel)
44. Naperville (Central)
It seems odd the four Illinois teams were bunched around the lower 40s, but that’s how the paper reported it.
The number of teams making the top 50 from each state was
- 4 from California, Florida, Illinois, Texas
- 3 from Louisiana, Ohio
- 2 from Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, New Jersey, Virginia
- 1 from Nevada (Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas, the top school in the listing)
In addition, one school was included in the paper’s top 50 from the District of Columbia and from each of the following states: Alabama, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, and Washington.
