Terms of service for uploading marching band photos

-

This page describes the terms and conditions of service for people who upload photos to our server in connection with marching bands. If you do not agree to the terms on this page, you are not allowed to upload photographs to our server.

Important: This is a family-oriented site. Whether you’re uploading a formal, professional photograph or a candid shot from a smartphone, you must adhere to the standards of the site, or your photo will not be published.

Acknowledgment of Copyright

All materials, except as otherwise noted, on Voxitatis websites, including schoolsnapshots.org, or published in written material under the Voxitatis flag are under copyright, but only some rights are reserved. We use the Creative Commons license known as “Attribution, Non-commercial, Share-alike” license, which you can (and should) read here.

If you upload a photo to our server, you acknowledge that you have the right to reproduce and display the photo and that you are placing a copyright restriction exactly like the one we use on the photo.

This means people can copy it, download it, reproduce it, talk about it, etc., to their heart’s content, as long as they give you credit for the photo and say where they got it.

Use of Photographer’s Name and Email Address

Because of the above copyright restriction on all photos, you must provide a name for every photo you upload. Since we refuse to use cookies for this purpose, we want you to feel safe, so therefore:

  • You don’t have to give your real name (you can use a screen-name if you would like)
  • You acknowledge that whoever copies your photo must give you credit using the name you provide

Regarding the email address, yes, you must provide it. In fact, all the questions must be answered. We won’t publish your email address or ever give it to anyone else. However, if we have questions about the photo or information you supplied, we will email you. If you don’t respond to our email or if it bounces, we won’t be able to publish your photo on our site.

Use of Event

Please tell us where you took the photo, at least by providing the event at which the photo was taken. For example, “Home football game on 9/1” would be a good start. Or, say something like “Bands of America Grand Nationals in Indianapolis, 11/15.”

Response to an Arithmetic Problem

Well, it’s not really a problem since we always give you the answer. Be sure to type just the answer. For example, if we say, “Type the sum only: 12+30 = 42,” you should type just “42” (without the quotes) in the box.

This question is used in place of a “captcha,” which computer robots have managed to figure out how to avoid. In order to prevent automatic upload, we jumble the message so you only need to pick out part of the text and type it in. If you don’t get it right or if you leave it blank, your upload will fail, and we’ll know you’re not a real human.

Upload File Limits

Files should be standard picture files or image files, including JPG (or JPEG), PNG, TIF (or TIFF), GIF, BMP (OS/2 or WIN), DWG, WMF, or PDF. We will convert them as appropriate in order to make them easier and quicker for people to download, but we won’t touch them up for you. We will produce a thumbnail (200 pixels high) for viewing on the screen as well as a file with your original dimensions for full-size viewing when people click on the thumbnail.

No file can be bigger than 5 MB. If it’s bigger, our server will refuse it right away. If you have an image file bigger than 5 MB, please reduce the quality before uploading it.

Image Quality and Appropriateness

We reserve the right to reject any photo that we feel would be inappropriate for viewing by people of all ages or that doesn’t relate to marching band. Our decision is final.

We have also found, from experience, that image dimensions of greater than about 1,000 in either axis might not fit on people’s screens. We will reduce one copy of any photos to thumbnail size (200-pixel height), but we will not change the dimensions on the photo we present when people click on the thumbnail. That one will stay in the same dimensions as in your original photograph, though we might optimize it, if necessary, for Web viewing to reduce download time for user’s browsers.
