An 8-year-old girl, a student at Steuart Hill Academic Academy on South Gilmor Street in Baltimore, was killed by a Jeep whose driver had run a red light at an intersection near her school, where the girl was crossing the street.
Reports in the Baltimore Sun suggest police received reports of a stolen Jeep Liberty at about 2:20 this afternoon. A police officer spotted the vehicle near Steuart Hill and made a U-turn to follow it. No chase ensued, since police procedure prohibits engaging in a chase after a stolen vehicle.
The driver of the Jeep, however, brushed a crossing guard and crashed into a Nissan Sentra, critically injuring the driver, before fleeing the scene on foot. A 14-year-old boy was arrested and charged as being the driver of the Jeep Liberty.
The girl who was killed was in a crosswalk when she was struck by the fleeing Jeep. Debris from the crashes also injured a 9-year-old boy, whose injuries were said to be non-life-threatening.
