Blacks with more school have jobs

-

According to a report by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, in celebration of Black History Month, the word is out that blacks are poised to weather this economic storm we find ourselves in quite well.

But without an education or at least a high school diploma, the picture is bleak.

The Washington Post cites the report, and says “Of the 6.8 million black men who are employed, the vast majority have at least a high school diploma. Many have college degrees or diplomas from technical schools. The same is true for the 8.4 million working black women.”

But the unemployment rate for 20-to-24-year-old men without a high school diploma is a whopping 55 percent. For 18- and 19-year-old men, it’s 91 percent without a high school diploma. Numbers for women are about 20 points lower, but still in the stratosphere.

But among those young people who have a professional degree, the unemployment rate drops sharply, the report says.
