Americans will spend less this year on back-to-school

The National Retail Federation’s back-to-school report projects that the average American family with children in kindergarten through 12th grade will spend $548.72 on school merchandise.

That represents spending that is 7.7 percent less than the $594.24 spent by the average American family with children in 2008.
