May is Military Appreciation Month

I heard some drums as I was traveling through Midway Airport in Chicago this afternoon. Following the music led me to a stomping drumline show by the drill team and percussion ensemble from Farragut Career Academy in Chicago, members of which were honoring Military Appreciation Month at the invitation of the Chicago Department of Aviation.

Instead of thanking members of our armed forces for their service, an expression of gratitude that, to me, has always seemed vapid, why not make a donation to the USO? This is an organization that can actually send a care package to US service men and women or provide them with a phone call home so they can speak with their loved ones.

As these men and women continue to serve, why not make a difference when and where it counts, in a manner that will have an impact on their lives today?

Alternatively, join one of several celebrations across the US this month that will honor veterans and the service they gave for our freedom.
