Baltimore student fatally shot after dispute

-

A student was shot after being dismissed from Mervo High School in northeast Baltimore Friday afternoon, WMAR-TV (ABC affiliate) reports.

A student from another school allegedly shot the Mervo student following a dispute, police say.

The suspected shooter was arrested, following a short foot pursuit, and a gun, believed to be the gun used in the shooting, was recovered.

The victim was taken to a local hospital and died shortly after arrival.

“When we have this loss of life in this way, I want us all to take a moment to really think about what that means for our young people, what we have to do in dealing with a school full of children who are crying yet again because they lost another classmate and what that means,” WBAL-TV (NBC affiliate) quoted Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott as saying at a press conference Friday afternoon. “Folks ask why I always spend so much time with our young people and why I call for people to step up and help out with young men and show them a different way. This is why.”

Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical (Mervo) High School is a public school in the Baltimore City Public School System serving about 1,800 students. Monday was the first day of school for students. WBAL reported that the football game between Mervo and Edmondson-Westside, scheduled for Friday evening, has been canceled.
