Musical theater award program extends to N. Calif.

-

BroadwaySF last week announced the expansion of its award program to include more counties in Northern California, according to their website. The regional awards recognize outstanding achievement in high school musical theatre as part of the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (NHSMTA) program, otherwise known as The Jimmy Awards.

Every June in New York City, the Jimmy Awards highlight and celebrate the talents of young performers, providing them with opportunities to showcase their skills on a larger platform. The program’s extension in Northern California represents a significant development for students involved in performing arts, offering them greater visibility and encouragement.

The Jimmy Awards are sponsored by more than 40 professional theater programs across the US, including Broadway In Chicago and the Illinois High School Musical Theatre Awards. Each program sponsors two student representatives to compete for the Jimmy Awards, which celebrate acting, vocal, and dance performances and promote the importance of theater arts education in schools.

More than $6 million in scholarships have been handed out through the NHSMTA. Several star alums went through the New York program during their high school years, including Kyle Selig, who is now playing Boq in the Broadway production of Wicked, and Joshua Grosso, who plays Marius in Les Misérables on National Tour.

Students’ time in New York for the awards also includes 10 days of intensive coaching sessions, training, and rehearsals. In 2022, winners received a $25,000 check to help further their education, and six finalists received a $3,000 scholarship.
