In a one-page letter posted to his X account, President Joe Biden announced that he would not seek reelection to the office of president.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President,” he wrote. “And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”
Mr Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president, The New York Times reports. The most recent time a sitting president eligible for reelection did not seek reelection was in 1968, also a somewhat divisive moment in American history, when President Lyndon Johnson made the decision.
Mr President, your legacy of accomplishment, not only as president but as a senator and vice president, transcends your time on this Earth, an Earth whose future has benefited from your efforts to reduce the negative impacts of climate change. It is a legacy that will continue to inspire and guide us, ensuring a brighter future for the generations to come. It has been and will continue to be an honor to have had you as our president.
