Movie review: Deadpool & Wolverine

-

As summer comes to a close, we look at student opinions of the summer’s latest addition to the superhero franchise: Deadpool & Wolverine. The opening scene seems to be a big hit, just like the movie itself.

Hemanth Tavane Shivakumar, writing in the student newspaper at Huron High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, says Deadpool & Wolverine is a chaotic, action-packed, and humor-filled Marvel film that thrives on the chemistry between its lead characters, delivering pure entertainment through meta jokes, stylized combat, and fan-pleasing cameos, despite a familiar plot and some over-reliance on fan service.

The movie is the latest entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), he writes, combining snark, humor, and stylized action in a way that sets it apart from formulaic superhero films. Directed by Shawn Levy, the film follows Deadpool, recruited by the Time Variance Authority to save the multiverse, dragging a reluctant Wolverine into the chaos. While the plot isn’t groundbreaking, it is the perfect backdrop for Ryan Reynolds’ dark humor as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s iconic portrayal of Wolverine. Their chemistry and banter drive the film, providing a fun, action-packed adventure with plenty of laughs and fourth-wall breaks.

He writes that its balance of action and humor makes it shine, offering enough thrills without veering into overly dark territory. Levy’s direction keeps the pace lively with well-executed action scenes, while the script is packed with meta references, MCU nods, and a parade of cameos. Though some may feel the film leans too heavily on fan service and lacks the inventiveness of other MCU entries, it more than compensates with sheer entertainment value. Ultimately, the film embraces its wild, over-the-top nature and offers fans a hilarious, heart-filled mashup that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Melanie Jandura, writing from St Charles North High School in Illinois, adds that because of many of the aspects of the film mentioned by Hemanth, she wasn’t surprised the film recently took the top box office prize of all time among R-rated movies. She writes:

It is impossible to talk about this movie without at least mentioning the iconic opening credit sequence: to the tune of NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye,” Deadpool uses pieces of a skeleton to slice through the Time Variance Authority agents confronting him. If that was not good enough by itself, he also dances throughout the scene with moves reminiscent of early 2000s boy bands…

Finally, at Coral Gables Senior High School in Florida, Anthony Fajardo spends much of his review quoting other students who found the film superb, including one senior, who said, “The opening scene of [the movie] is definitely one of the most memorable parts of the entire experience. Not only is the song a classic, but Deadpool’s dancing was funny considering he was in the middle of a fight. Even if it got a little repetitive, I really enjoyed that introduction.”
