Warren Grant, a resident of the Edgewood community in Harford County, Maryland, and a 15-year-old student at Joppatowne High School, was fatally shot this afternoon during an isolated dispute, authorities said, another episode of gun violence in a school, just two days after four people were killed at a Georgia high school, WBAL-TV (NBC affiliate), The New York Times, and WJZ-TV (CBS affiliate) report.
The school’s nurse immediately tended to Warren following the shooting. He was flown by medical helicopter to a local hospital in serious condition, where he later died, WJZ-TV reported.
The alleged teenage gunman fled the scene, running from the school, but police later captured him and took him into custody. He is expected to be charged as an adult, though authorities have not released his name.
“Our hearts are breaking for the victim and the victim’s family,” the station quoted Harford County Schools Superintendent Dr Sean Bulson as saying. “This should not be happening in schools.”
A massive and swift emergency response involved more than 100 officers from Harford County, Baltimore County, the Maryland Transportation Authority, area municipal police departments, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The school was evacuated, and parents picked up their children at a nearby church.
According to the Maryland School Report Card, Joppatowne High School serves 985 students. Joppatowne is about 20 miles northeast of Baltimore.
