Today’s preschoolers are members of “Generation C,” the connected society. They have always known a world where social media and apps are an integral part of life. How much do they know, and how much do they really need to know at such a young age?
That’s a question asked by the Joan Ganz Cooney Center, and some of the center’s work about this complex issue is described in an infographic posted below from a resource locator for people who want to pursue degrees in early childhood education.
Are your kids “addicted” to technology? Here are some of the signs:
- Too much time is spent engaged with technology
- They are constantly preoccupied with technology
- They withdraw from social situations and previously enjoyable activities to play with devices
- They are tired and irritable due to lack of sleep
- They feel bored when not using digital devices
- School performance suffers due to focus on technology
And when we say “preschoolers,” we mean really young toddlers and infants. The website babies.co.uk found that around 1 in 7 of about 1,000 parents surveyed in the UK let their babies spend four or more hours every day with a smartphone in their hands. At this age, they’re only awake for about 10 hours a day!
