A flash mob occurred at Maine West High School in Des Plaines, Ill., on Valentine’s Day for the second year in a row before classes started, the Daily Herald reports.
The show these students put on was part of a worldwide campaign, coordinated by the global activist movement V-Day and dedicated to ending violence against women and girls. Events occur in more than 160 countries around the world.
For example, two V-Day events in Maryland will be conducted at Towson University and Goucher College on March 8 and 28, respectively, as members put on the play “The Vagina Monologues.”
This award-winning play is based on V-Day founder and playwright Eve Ensler’s interviews with more than 200 women. With humor and grace, the piece celebrates women’s sexuality and strength. Through this play and the liberation of this one word, many women have taken control of their bodies and their lives. For more than 12 years, “The Vagina Monologues” has given voice to experiences and feelings not previously expressed in public.
According to V-Day, one billion women will be raped or beaten in their lifetime. Although events occur throughout the year, the group’s focus is on Valentine’s Day, kicking off a big celebration with musical performances, flash mobs, and dancers in New York City, at which one speaker declared, “A dream has the power to look a thief in the eye and take back its treasure.”
The celebration at Maine West included poetry from the school’s poetry slam team, dances, and other spectacles, according to the Daily Herald.
