A former band teacher at Alton High School was sentenced Aug. 30 to six years in prison for molesting a 16-year-old student, the Associated Press reports.
Judge Charles Romani pronounced the sentence from his Madison County Circuit Court bench. Assistant Madison County State’s Attorney John Fischer said this was not the first time Matthew Lang, 37, had molested a student he was supposed to be teaching.
“He was her teacher. He was her mentor. He took advantage of her. He took advantage of his position,” the Telegraph quoted Mr Fischer as saying. “He is a danger to every student he ever had, and the state does not believe this is his only victim. We are hoping others will come forward.”
The sentence was not the maximum allowed—15 years—because the victim wrote a letter saying she had not been harmed by Mr Lang’s actions and had moved on.
