Sixteen students from Baltimore City and Baltimore County are getting a real understanding of what goes into a forensic crime scene investigation at a summer camp hosted by the Baltimore City Police Department and Loyola University Maryland, WBAL-TV (NBC affiliate) reports.
The camp has been running for a week and, thanks to a grant, is free for the students participating in it.
“Being a mom with kids getting ready to go to college and me having a lot of partnerships with the area schools,” the station quoted Terri Labbe, a forensic scientist with the Baltimore City Police Department and camp organizer as saying, “I realized there were a lot of students who wouldn’t have the opportunity to join some of these camps because they can cost thousands of dollars to attend.”

For the students, the camp has opened a few eyes and possibly a few career options.
“We really get to feel like we’re in the lab, taking fingerprints, looking at crime scenes,” one participant told the station.
“Helping the community and giving families and friends … who, like, are longing for that justice for whatever happened to, like, a victim, I think it’s really important because then they’ll be able to, just like, be at peace with that,” another student participant said.
