Is senioritis a slump or a sign of readiness?

-

For the seniors at Stevens High School, the final stretch of the academic year has transformed the classroom into a waiting room, reports Jackson Anderson in the school’s student newspaper.

What does senioritis look like for you?

The phenomenon of “senioritis” is a mixture of burnout and elective detachment. It has found a new life on social media, turning the struggle to focus into a shared digital aesthetic.

While 50-minute periods start to feel like an eternity, students like Sophia Wright admit the mental shift happens early: once college acceptances are in hand, the motivation to “devote time to nothing” vanishes in favor of a future that feels more real than the present.

However, the “light at the end of the tunnel” can be a deceptive optic. Science teacher Katie Wiedrich observes that while students are increasingly distracted by what lies ahead, they often lose sight of the foundational goals required to get there.

This “false hope” can lead to a dip in performance just as the stakes for scholarships and final admissions peak. The stress isn’t just about grades; it’s the weight of the “remainder of childhood” sitting on the shoulders of the next 90 days.

But does it really matter?

Bianca Reidy writes in the student newspaper at Staples High School in Westport, Connecticut, that “seniors have realized that not everything deserves their energy. Most seniors are already in college; their midterms and first-semester grades are already wrapped and shipped to their colleges, and now all there is to do is wait for their new chapter to begin.

“Of course, we care about our futures, but we just care less about pointless busy work that won’t follow us beyond the classroom. If anything, the good news is this means we are ready to move on.”
