Suspects indicted in killing of Arnesha Bowers

The body of Arnesha Bowers, an 11th grader at Baltimore City College High School, was found in a northeast Baltimore row home on June 7, a house that had been set on fire. Today, three suspects in her rape and murder were indicted, the Baltimore Sun reports.

The three suspects are in jail now, charged as adults with first-degree murder, rape, arson, and gang-related crimes:

  • John Childs, 20
  • Adonay Dixon, 23
  • Raeshawn Rivers, 14

“I promise to continue to pursue justice on behalf of Arnesha, who was brutally assaulted and murdered,” the paper quoted State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby as saying at a news conference earlier today. “The brutality of Arnesha’s death has affected all of us.”

Arnesha, whose former teacher Martha Armenti described her as “effervescent, wise, and enterprising.” was one of six people killed in Baltimore during the June 6–8 weekend. Violence has continued unabated in the city, which recorded 42 homicides in May, the most in 25 years.

The killing of Arnesha, which took place during the same weekend two boys, ages 8 and 10, were killed, caused an elementary school to close temporarily in her neighborhood and the Baltimore City Council to observe a moment of silence in her memory.
