Across the country, marching bands are once again filling fields with music, motion, and meaning. For some, the season will end under the bright lights of national competitions; for others, it will be the home football field that becomes their stage. In either case, the spirit is the same: the work ethic that defines marching band.
Indianapolis, BOA Grand National Championships, November 2015 (Voxitatis)At Bearden High School in Knoxville, Tennessee, Hannah Simmons writes in the student newspaper about how her classmates push themselves through the rigors of a new show. Long rehearsals, early starts, and demanding drills have tested both endurance and teamwork. Yet, it’s exactly this discipline that forges unity.
“You never stop being that person that people look up to,” head drum major Jenna Easley reflected, speaking to the constant responsibility of leadership. Assistant drum major Calvin Blackmon echoed the passion of the ensemble: “I think we bring a lot of emotion to the music already, and I’m excited to see us grow.”
The Bearden High School marching band is set to debut its new halftime show, “A Picture’s Worth,” during the Bulldogs’ September 5 home football game against Maryville. The production explores formative life events and emphasizes both musical expression and visual storytelling.
Marching band, at its heart, is about more than clean drill and polished sound. It’s about freshmen discovering resilience at their first band camp. It’s about drum majors learning to carry the weight of leadership. It’s about 130 individuals moving as one to create something bigger than themselves.
Last year, Argyle High School of Texas proved that same ethic on the national stage in a semifinal performance at the Bands of America Grand National Championships with a field show of the same name, wrote Tierney Withrow in Argyle’s student news site.
This year, Bearden’s performance journey will begin on September 5, with the band’s first competition scheduled for September 20. Both schools remind us that no matter the stage, the lesson holds: When passion meets persistence, something extraordinary takes shape.
So as a new season begins, here’s to every student stepping onto the field with determination in their step and music in their heart.
