The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect, a male student, was taken to a local hospital after the shooting but later died. Two students injured in the attack were taken to a local hospital, and one of the injured students has since stabilized and was transferred to another hospital.

The shooting began just before 12:30pm at Evergreen High, about 30 miles southwest of Denver. Investigators said the suspect used a revolver. The school is part of the Jefferson County Public School District, which also includes Columbine High School, the site of the 1999 mass shooting that remains one of the deadliest in US history.

Evergreen High enrolls about 900 students in grades 9 through 12, according to the Colorado Department of Education. In a statement, Jefferson County Superintendent Tracy Dorland said: “We cannot pretend this is just another tragic incident. … The pain of this incident reopens old wounds.”

The shooting adds to a grim list of school attacks across the country and renews familiar questions about student safety, gun access, and the lasting scars such incidents leave on communities still haunted by past tragedies.
